What’s the first information you consume in the morning?
I look at my emails first. I try to start off with something that feels good. I get emails from the DailyOM and A Common Meditation for All Souls that I like to look at. Then I can worry about business.

Tell us about your social media habits.
I started using WhoSay, but I don’t know how to do it that well! I’m really not techno-savvy—that’s just not my personality. Right now, I just do Twitter, basically. Both of my daughters are on Instagram, and I’d like to start using that because I love photography.

What’s your favorite app?
I Skype! I think that’s a miracle.

What occupies your mind in the car?
I hope it’s the road! It’s kind of scary. We’ve become such a multitasking society that just paying attention to the road doesn’t seem to be that important anymore. I have to remind my kids all the time that that’s what you’re supposed to be doing in the car. I don’t usually listen to anything when I’m driving—it can be nice to have silence—but when I was working on Cedar Cove, the guy who drove me had the best music on his iPod. It was lots of old music—just really great stuff.

Are you a TV junkie?
I’m not a huge TV person. I don’t like having the noise when I’m doing other things unless I’m really lonely, and then I turn the TV on. But I do like to sit down and watch TV in the evenings. The other day, I watched The Newsroom for the first time after a friend recommended it. That was really good. I’m so disappointed in the news nowadays—I watch CNN, but they talk about the same things over and over. I wish there was a news channel that really told you what was going on in the world, not just sensationalized news. And I watched the whole first season of Girls with my daughters. I probably won’t watch the second season—it was too immature for me—but it was interesting. I’m going to sound like an ancient person, but I was rather shocked at what they can show on TV now!

How do you wind down before bed?
I like a routine. I always try to do something calming and not think about business or bills or anything like that. So I make chamomile tea, take a bath and put on my pajamas, and I read. Right now, I’m reading Gone Girl. I read half of it on a plane yesterday and loved it.

Your TV show, Cedar Cove, is based on a book series. Had you read any of the books before?
I hadn’t, but I’ve started reading them since! It’s mostly just to honor the author, Debbie Macomber, and be respectful of her fans. And it’s good to know the flavor of the books.

Do you prefer to read in print or on a tablet?
I really like print books, but I’ve been reading Gone Girl on my iPad, and I have to say, it’s not bad. You can read really fast. And it’s much easier for traveling.
